Re: HAMILTON
Hamilton Jazzmaster Cushion Watch Review
For a solidly made Swiss watch at a price that won't make most people's head spin around, Hamilton is one of the few good options. In fact, between Hamilton, Tissot, Certina, and Longines, the Swatch Group has the sub $4,000 Swiss made mechanical watch market almost cornered. This Hamilton Cushion in the Jazzmaster collection is a solid mechanical watch buy for under $1,000.
Inspired by vintage designs - but certainly modern - the Jazzmaster Cushion is a great mix of both worlds. The name comes from the case shape with is... well a cushion. Though Hamilton didn't want to give the watch just a basic cushion shape. In the images you can see the architected corners and sides that give the piece a lot of visual style. Details like that make this watch interesting.
The polished steel case is 43mm wide but wears larger thanks to the cushion shape and the tapered leather strap. This version of the watch has a sort of anthracite toned dial, while a silvered dial version is also available. I further believe that the Jazzmaster Cushion comes in chronograph form. Thanks to the relatively flat bottom and short lugs, the watch wears well (and comfortably) on most any wrist.
Dial legibility is quite good. Hamilton got the length of the hands right as well as the overall proportions. The dial style certain hearkens back to "long ago," but doesn't feel old. There is a mix of sport and sophistication, resulting in an ambiguous hybrid design that still seems to "just work." The Arabic numeral "12" at the top of the dial helps ground the look of the face which otherwise has diamond style baton markers. The elements are all applied which helps the dial from feeling flat.
Over the dial is an AR coated sapphire crystal and the case is water resistant to 100 meters. While the crown might look inset, it is comfortable to operate. Legibility is actually not bad either. Dials like this can often have the hands blend into the dial, but that is not as much of an issue here as it can be in other designs. There are thin strips of lume in the hands and hour markers.
Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2824 automatic movement that is visible through a exhibition caseback window. You can see how much larger the watch case is compared to the movement. A hint about this is the placement of the date window on the dial. Hamilton creates an intended ring which helps the date window from looking like it is oddly placed in the middle of the face.
Attached to the case is a supple leather strap. The brown leather has an alligator print, but it is well done. All the right texture and shine is there, and the strap is very soft and cushioned. Sometimes fake alligator straps are only printed with the texture - and those look horrible. Not the case here. The strap is further tapered a bit to enhance the look of the case.
This is overall a pretty satisfying watch is the look appeals to you. It has a handsome quality to it and feels reasonably priced given the quality. Just what a Hamilton timepiece should be. Retail price is $845.

Re: HAMILTON
Hamilton Ventura XXL Watch In Men In Black III
A new limited edition version of the Hamilton Ventura XXL watch will be worn by major characters in the new Men In Black III (3) movie that will open this month. I believe that previous Men In Black (MIB) movies also featured other versions of the famous Ventura watch. This newest version is the Ventura XXL model in polished steel, and it is a limited edition.
The Ventura is a very special model in not only Hamilton's history, but also American history. It is among the most iconic wrist watches ever designed - and it was a total USA baby. The original was released back in 1957. The image in this article with the older Ventura shows a model from 1969. I believe the original models were tuning fork based watches with electronic movements. These were the predecessors of quartz movements.
On and off, Ventura models have been in the Hamilton collection for years. The Ventura XXL that was released a few years ago was meant to be a larger, more modern version of the classic. It is 46mm by 45.5mm in size and comes here in a polished steel case. The design of the 2012 model is almost identical to that of the outgoing Ventura XXL limited edition model, but this is in polished steel versus PVD black coated steel. There is also a similar new model called the Ventura Medium. It comes in men's and women's versions and is 32.30mm by 50.30mm in size - shaped more similarly to the original.
The Ventura XXL is more triangular than the original, but feels similar in theme. The dial is interesting yet legible. The entire thing looks like a swoopy spaceship on your wrist. The case is curved for comfort, and the detailing is pretty nice. Over the dial is a sapphire crystal and the case is water resistant to 50 meters. You have to try one on if you never have.
This 2012 Hamilton Ventura XXL limited edition watch will come as a set of 999 pieces. The integration of the Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement is rather interesting as the round movement sits in the triangle-shaped case. Attached to the case is a thick black rubber strap. Style-wise this piece can't be beat - but that doesn't mean everyone is going to love it. It would be interesting to see Hamilton make the Ventura a more important arm of their collection. Price for the 2012 Hamilton Ventura XXL limited edition watch is $1,345.

Re: HAMILTON
Hamilton Khaki X-Patrol
An aviation-inspired watch released this year as part of Hamilton’s 120th anniversary celebration, the Khaki X-Patrol offers a unique and eminently useful feature for anyone who regularly finds himself traveling between America and other world destinations: a mechanical conversion function that allows the wearer to quickly calculate miles into kilometers, feet into meters, et cetera.
The watch’s two scales — one on the periphery of the dial and one on a turning bezel — provide conversions for distance in miles (nautical or statute) and kilometers; heights or altitudes in feet and meters; volumes in gallons and liters; and weights in pounds and kilograms. To make the conversions, you simply unscrew the crown at 9 o’clock to position an arrow for the first unit of measurement on the outer bezel scale. Its appropriate metric or imperial equivalent is then indicated on the inner scale. After reading the measurement, just push the crown back into place and re-screw to secure it until it’s needed again.
The watch is also a chronograph, powered by the new, proprietary, automatic Caliber H21. Three subdials, at 6 o’clock, 12 o’clock, and 9 o’clock, keep track of chronograph hours, chronograph minutes and running seconds, respectively. The pushers to operate the chrono are at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock. The day and date are displayed in a window at 3 o’clock. Caliber H21 also provides the watch an impressively lengthy power reserve of 60 hours.
The dials are available in either black or silver, with contrasting reflectors. The watch is offered on a black leather strap with white contrast stitching, a black rubber strap, or a steel bracelet. The aviation theme is particularly evident even on the caseback, which integrates a propeller-inspired design that allows a partial view of the movement. The turning bezel has a ridged pattern on the side that reminds one of precision engineering. Watch enthusiasts will appreciate some of the other details, such as the visible screws on the caseback and the nonreflective coating on the sapphire crystal. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters (which, thanks to the Khaki X-Patrol’s conversion function, we Americans can quickly translate as about 328 feet). The price is $1,695.
