Glashütte Original Unveils Redesigned Pano Collection

“Don’t mess with success” is a mantra to which many watch brands subscribe; German luxury watch brand Glashütte Original, on the other hand, has adopted another piece of advice: “Don’t rest on your laurels.” As proof, witness the company’s subtle, yet significant, redesigns in its popular Pano Collection of timepieces, from which four new models made their debut last month at Baselworld. Click below for info, pricing and wallpaper images of the new watches.

The Pano watches arrived on the watch scene 12 years ago with the debut of the first PanoRetroGraph — a chronograph with an eye-catching asymmetrical dial and “retro” chronograph mechanism with 30-minute counter. A limited edition of 50 pieces in platinum that quickly sold out, it was succeeded by the first PanoGraph model in 2002, which incorporated many elements of the design, as did subsequent models like the PanoMatic Lunar, PanoReserve and PanoInverse.

The Pano watches making their debut in 2012 have larger cases (most growing from 39 mm to 40 mm; the PanoInverse XL has a 42-mm case) and more expansive dials due to the thinner bezels and Glashütte Original’s design decision to omit the chapter rings of previous models. Each new Pano model also features its own enhancements, which the company has incorporated for what it calls a more elegant, contemporary look.

The PanoGraph takes advantage of its larger case size and dial dimensions by moving the interlocking hour/minute and subsidiary seconds subdials to the left while leaving the large “Panorama” date display (a Glashütte specialty) at the 4 o’clock position. The 30-minute chronograph counter has three 10-minute scales with three separate pointers; the chrono pushers at 4 o’clock and 2 o’clock are labeled “START-STOP” and “FLY-BACK,” respectively, to indicate their function. The movement, manual-wind manufacture Caliber 61-03, has a column-wheel chronograph mechanism and features the traditional three-quarters plate with Glashütte waves decoration. The watch is in a rose gold case and comes with either a black or brown leather strap, which is slightly wider than the previous version. It is priced at $37,200.

The larger dial dimensions also aid the PanoReserve in achieving its clean, minimalist look. The big date is at 4 o’clock, next to the off-center hours, minutes and seconds and just below the stripped-down power-reserve indicator (labeled in the German “auf” and “ab” for “off” and “on,” respectively). The watch is powered by manual-wind manufacture Caliber 65-10, which has a 42-hour power reserve. the PanoReserve is now available in either a rose-gold edition with a silver dial ($21,500) or in two stainless steel versions (both $11,000), one with a silver dial, blued hands and blued steel indicator on the power reserve display; the other with a gray ruthenium dial, white-gold hands and a white-on-gray Panorama date.

The PanoInverse XL — a timepiece that essentially moved the back view of the watch to the front by a clever reworking of the movement — had the watch world buzzing when it debuted in 2008. The existing model in stainless steel upgrades this year to a 42-mm case that makes for an even bigger showcase for the three-quarter plate, the oscillating screw balance, and the movement’s most noteworthy piece of tech, the duplex swan’s-neck adjustment, which regulates the watch’s rate, all of which are visible from the dial side of the watch, along with the hours, minutes, small seconds, and power reserve. Glashütte original reworked all the plates and wheel-pinion subgroups in the movement, Caliber 66-04, to fit the new dimensions. The watch is $12,600 on an alligator strap and $13,600 on a steel bracelet. This year also sees the release of a rose-gold version of the PanoInverse XL, limited to 200 pieces ($24,900).

Finally, the PanoMaticLunar, the collection’s moon-phase model, retains its asymmetrical design but with a few adjustments: The hour-minute and small-seconds subdials remain aligned along a vertical axis left of the dial’s center, while the Panorama date and moon-phase display are positioned slightly to the lower and upper right, respectively. Fans of the brand will also note the smaller, more elegant indices and the lack of a bold Arabic “12″ in the hours/minutes subdial. The movement is Glashütte Original’s own Caliber 90-02. There are three new versions of thePanoMaticLunar: one in a rose-gold case with rose-gold hands and indices and a silver dial ($21,300); another in stainless steel with blued steel hands, silver hour indices and a silver dial; and another in steel with ruthenium dial, silver indices, and white-gold hands. Both steel versions are $10,800 on alligator straps and $12,000 on steel bracelets.

GLASHÜTTE - Senator Perpetual Calendar

#wtbasel| The variations on a true classic by Glashütte Original.

Press Release

The Senator line has been a pillar of the collection since its introduction in 1997. Today’s models are as exquisite and elegant as their predecessors, yet clearly more contemporary, and the flagship of the line remains the Senator Perpetual Calendar.

Made by hand in the manufactory in Glashütte, the Perpetual Calendar testifies to the on-going quest for the perfect union of mechanical complications and art. At last year’s fair in Basel the Saxon manufactory presented a beautiful version of this exquisite mechanical timepiece, encased in red gold with a matt black dial. This year’s fair brings the introduction of three variations on this sophisticated model: in red gold with a silver dial, or in stainless steel with either a warm silver or a matt black dial.

Εικόνα

All Senator Perpetual Calendar displays are arranged to form a clear, harmonious balance, and are easily read through the antireflective sapphire crystal. The day, month and compelling Glashütte Original Panorama Date display shows either white or black numerals against the ground. On the black dial versions, the phases of the moon are revealed by a black disk adorned with silver stars and a radiant silver moon, while the timekeepers outfitted with a warm silver dial show a silver moon on a blue disk.

Εικόνα

A discreet, unambiguous leap year display presents a red dot to indicate a leap year, followed by yellow, black and white dots for successive years. The heart of the Senator Perpetual Calendar, easily visible through the sapphire glass mounted in the case back, is the Glashütte Original Caliber 100-02, a superb 28,800 vph automatic movement featuring a screw balance with 18 weighted golden screws and a power reserve of more than 55 hours (+/- 10%).

Its reset mechanism allows easy synchronization of the second hand with a time standard. Unlike other reset mechanisms, the second hand is connected neither to the winding stem nor the crown.

Εικόνα

As a result, when the crown is pulled out, the balance remains in oscillation and the movement continues to run, significantly reducing material stress. Pressing a separate button on the side of the case at 8 o'clock activates the reset mechanism. The rotor winds in both directions, providing constant power to the movement.

Exquisitely finished components enhance the artistry of the movement's design: the signature Glashütte three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing, skeletonized rotor with 21-ct gold oscillation weight, twin spring barrels and swan-neck fine adjustment. Black Louisiana alligator or black rubber bracelets, both with foldover clasps in either red gold or stainless steel, complement the Senator Perpetual Calendar's elegant and compelling aesthetics.

Glashütte Original Panoinverse XL

Εικόνα

As I admire the beautiful dial of the Glashütte Original Panoinverse XL, it is the rubies which are an immediate hit with me.

The face
The dial has numerous visual delights to captivate the wearer. The first thing that immediately draws the eye is the galvanic black three quarter plate. It features Glashütte ribbing, the vertical stripes running from north to south.

Εικόνα

The hours and minutes are shown on an off-centre dial, biased to the left hand side of the face.

Examine the hours and minutes closely and you will observe white gold numerals and indices with an arced profile affording a three dimensional quality.

A smaller subsidiary seconds dial overlaps the aforementioned dial adding further interest to the face of the watch.

Adjacent to 2 o’clock is the power reserve indicator, sweeping left when the mainspring is fully wound. It quietly imparts the status of the mainspring using a discreet scribed scale marked on the three-quarter plate, ensuring the cohesive clarity of the face is not corrupted.

Duplex swan-neck regulator and balance bridge
The area between 3 o’clock and 6 o’clock is dominated by the swan-neck regulator and balance bridge. Glashütte Original have not hidden these within the case and followed convention but made them a delicacy to savour.

Εικόνα

The Duplex swan-neck regulator provides fine adjustment of the beat and rate of the timepiece using two small index-adjusters either side of the balance wheel.

Look closely and you will be indulged with fine horology typical of this manufacture from Saxony.

The balance bridge is supremely adorned with engraving. It is constructed of silver treated with Ruthenium. Unlike untreated German silver it will not age, but retain a factory-fresh appearance.

The screw balance incorporates 18 weighted gold screws and reminds the owner of the painstaking perfection practised by the artisans in Glashütte. At its heart beats a Nivarox, flat balance spring, oscillating backwards and forwards at 28,800 vph.

The case
The case is perfectly in proportion with a diameter of 42mm. It steers away from the recent trend for leviathan lignes. Constructed of stainless steel, it blends highly polished surfaces of the top and underside with the brushed vertical sides.

The crown bears the company logo and has a knurled finish to aid winding.

Glashütte I/SA
To carry the protected designation of origin. A watch bearing Glashütte I/SA on the dial must have at least 50% of the movements value added in Glashütte. This watch has a manufacture movement made by Glashütte Original, hence achieving this requirement comfortably.

This watch is faithful to the traditions of watchmaking from this region with Glashütte ribbing, three-quarter plate, gold chatons. It has not eschewed its values in the pursuit of modernity.

The strap
No perfunctory fastening, but a strap made of Louisiana nubuk alligator leather. It has a deployant made of stainless steel providing the leather with enhanced longevity when contrasted with a conventional pin buckle.

Back to those rubies
Admire the movement with its components beautifully polished and edges bevelled. It is an exemplar of endowed design eloquence. But I find myself returning to those rubies.

Rubies are often hidden within the case and are the bearings for moving parts, sometimes acting as small reservoirs for lubricanting oils. However, these rubies go beyond this and will elicit euphoria from admirers of haute horology. They punctuate the dial with pulses of warmth.

I count eight rubies visible from the front of the watch. Two gold chatons secure two of the visible rubies with white gold screws affixed to the three-quarter plate. They are a commemoration of the artistry for which this region is famed.

Conclusion
I am besotted by this timepiece. It has integrity and craftsmanship.

The aesthetic appeal of the dial cannot be denied. It is simply beautiful with a contemporary feel. However, it is the rubies which are the causation of my craving.

The warmth of the rubies featured on the dial would thaw the coldest heart. I would not restrict my admiration to Ruby Tuesday but want to wear this watch on everyday of the week.

Glashütte Original Senator Moon Phase Skeletonized Edition

This is a very special new 100 piece limited edition from Glashütte Original — the Glashütte Original Senator Moon Phase Skeletonized Edition. Utilizing the mastercrafts of skeletonization and fine engraving, this latest masterpiece from the Saxon manufactory takes up the Glashütte Original 1845 Classic Up/Down with Moon Phase model originally introduced about ten years ago. Presented in a reworked, superbly finished red gold case designed, this Senator Moon Phase features a skeletonized dial with moon phase, power reserve and hour/minutes/small seconds indicators. Visible through the sapphire caseback are some splendid details: the winding wheels with double-sunburst decoration, screw-mounted gold chatons with blued steel screws, hand-engraved plates, a lavishly finished swan-neck fine adjustment, and gold engraved lettering and limited edition numbering (001/100). Unfortunately the light and angles on the images leave a some to the imagination — I hope to have some close ups of the movement work soon. A truly splendid timepiece.

Glashütte Original Senator Moon Phase Skeletonized Edition (Ref 49-13-15-15-04)

Limited, numbered edition of 100 pieces

42mm red gold case (11.2mm thick), manual wind GO manufacture Caliber 49-13 (40-hour power reserve)p; fitted on a matte black Louisiana alligator strap with foldover clasp and highly polished, dark brown wooden case
