Re: Ulysse Nardin
Ulysse Nardin Executive Dual Time Watch Review
I recall the first time that I saw the Executive Dual Time watch. I was visiting Ulysse Nardin at a watch trade show and saw some models I hadn't yet familiarized myself with being displayed. Clearly they were UN watches but they didn't really have that typical UN look many people associate with the brand. "Executive" in the name seemed to hint that UN wanted these watches to be aimed at business types looking for a solid daily wear. The construction was impressive and I couldn't get over that super legible dial - but did I like the watch?
After spending some time with a Ulysse Nardin Executive Dual Time watch I can easily say that I do in-fact really like the watch. At first I wasn't sure, but the piece really grew on me in a serious way - thanks in most part to a combination of factors including the movement, legibility and quality. I still don't know how it fits into the overall DNA of the Ulysse Nardin product family and frankly I don't even care. Ulysse Nardin is an independent watch maker - and they can design and release whatever they like without making sure it fits into some prescribed mold.
This specific Executive Dual Time watch is the reference # 243-00/42. Look online and you'll find a seriously intense assortment of styles in the collection. The steel (also available in 18k rose gold) case is 43mm wide and has a very broad lug structure and strap. This makes it feel larger on the wrist while not looking like a big watch. 43mm wide not considered too large today and the mostly round case with thick bezel keeps it from looking at all large on the wrist. The bezel mind you is black ceramic. Here the material is used properly to add color, shine, and of course ceramic's high level of scratch resistance.
Ulysse Nardin did a good job making the case interesting, but not too strange. Completely polished, the finishing is well-done and the little details on the case prevent it from being boring. The proprietary strap connection on the lugs forces you to buy only Ulysse Nardin straps, but you could argue it is worth the unique look. It is even easy to appreciate the detailing put into the crown guard and the crown with its applied UN logo. On the other side of the case are two ceramic pushers and a serial number plate. While this is not a limited edition watch, Ulysse Nardin likes to personalize each piece with a plate containing its unique serial number.
I am impressed that the Executive Dual Time has a water resistance of 100 meters. That isn't incredibly high or anything, but more than I would have expected in this style of watch. Over the dial is a sapphire crystal with the proper amount of AR coating to prevent as much glare as is possible. Another sapphire crystal is over the case back to show the movement.

Ulysse Nardin Black Sea Chronograph
This new Ulysse Nardin Black Sea Chronograph — its matte-black appearance caught my eye and upon closer inspection there is a lot to like about this watch. Specifically, the great looking case this watch — turns out it is rubber-coated stainless steel — something Ulysse Nardin has been using on a lot of its watches lately, and to great effect. Then there is the grained dial — not something you see every day (see closeups below), and I like it. The rubber strap also has a fine textured to it which harmonizes well with the dial and rubber case. Note also the black inserts on the rubber strap — black ceramic (the buckle is ceramic, too). The dial is well organized with good color and lume placement. I also really like the nice, fat semi-skeletonized hands with lumed tips (also seen often on UN watches). Though I am not a huge Ulysee Nardin fan (purely a matter of preference), this is definitely a Ulysee Nardin I would wear. It is an incredibly good looking watch.
Ulysse Nardin Black Sea Chronograph
45.8mm rubber-coated steel case (200 meters WR), automatic mechanical UN manufacture caliber 35, chronograph with central chronograph seconds hand and permanent seconds in a counter at 3 o’clock, 30 minutes counter at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour counter detailed
at 6 o’clock, rubber strap with ceramic inserts

Re: Ulysse Nardin
Ulysse Nardin Minute Repeater Tourbillon Jaquemarts Watches Hands-On
There are two very rare watches covered in this article. Both are in the Westminster Minute Repeater Jaquemarts Tourbillon collection. Actually, I have seen this collection name arranged in a series of ways. Suffice it to say that "Minute Repeater, Jaquemarts, and Tourbillon" are all in the name - somewhere. These are among the most complex and expensive watches that are produced by Ulysse Nardin.
I actually covered the Jaquemarts Tourbillon collection before in this article here. I am covering the pieces again mainly because I got some much better video and photography. This merits a second look because a watch collection such as this is all about the beauty of the details. These models we have here are the famous Genghis Khan piece and the later Alexander the Great version. Note that the Genghis Khan version is the extremely limited edition of 30 pieces Genghis Khan Haute Joaillerie timepiece.
You can see that the Genghis Khan Haute Joaillerie watch isn't even on a strap yet (being factory fresh). For this watch, the 18k white gold case (44m wide) is set with over six (6) carats of diamonds. Diamonds line the lugs and bezel, as well as around the periphery of the dial. Black diamonds are used for the hour markers. Ulysse Nardin keeps this masculine by opting for baguette style diamond cuts. Note how the dial background is onyx on that piece.
Inside of these pieces is a movement that has three impressive features. First is the tourbillon, second is the Westminster minute repeater, and third are the automatons (jaquemarts). Each of these elements alone is a big deal, but together they make for something extraordinary. The jaquemarts move around as the minute repeater is operated. It is a fun thing to watch and it is impressive how detailed the figurines are.
Let me ask you something, does the tourbillon bridge look like a peacock? See what I mean. I totally see a peacock or some other bird. The movement is the Ulysse Nardin produced caliber UN-78. Manually wound, it has about 70 hours of power reserve and looks pretty fantastic as visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. I took a heap of pictures of the movement - many of which you can see in the gallery below. Not only is the movement architecture attractive and well finished, but it is great to watch it in action when you activate the minute repeater.
The real distinction between the Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great Minute Repeater Jaquemarts Tourbillon watches are the figurines on the dial. Yet both seem to use a similar mechanical layout with different characters. The focus is on the horse-rider, which is presumably the man of action... Khan or Alex. Seeing the animated automaton display is a pleasure from another time. With today's technology, seeing little hand-engraved gold figures writhing about is not that innovative. But, at the same time, there is an innate satisfaction to seeing them move around and swing their weapons. Like children, we grin and giggle as the deceptively simple display takes a still dial and turns it to life. For literally hundreds of years, people have been entertained by stuff like this. There is a sort of built-in nostalgia which transcends time and the $600,000 - $1,000,000 price tag on these limited edition watches.

Ulysse Nardin Black Sea (Yellow)
A new one from Le Locle, Switzerland-based Ulysse Nardin’s Black Sea collection — a chronograph with yellow hands and indices. This watch joins the earlier model with red accents, and also the Black Sea Chronograph which I wrote about this past May. Again the stainless-steel case is specially treated with a complex vulcanization process which gives it a matte-black rubber coating. Small seconds and round date are displayed at 6 o’clock. There is also a power-reserve indicator situated at 12 o’clock — though as it is an automatic watch I don’t really see the need for such an indicator. Water resistant to 200 meters. Comes on a black rubber strap with ceramic inserts and ceramic folding clasp.
