Audemars Piguet 1960s oversized watch in 18k gold



It’s been a while since we dipped into the wonderful horological Aladdin’s cave that is Derek Dier’s Watches to buy.com website, and as usual, within seconds we found a stunner from the 1960s. It’s not surprising that the producers of the smash hit TV series Mad Men called upon Derek’s expertise to supply them with watches for the eagerly awaited season 5. We’ve been trying to discover which watches they may be, but Derek is keeping quieter than one of Donald Draper’s secret liaisons.

It’s an Audemars Piquet 2003 calibre 18k gold watch even slimmer than Italy’s chances of resolving its debt problems. The solid gold case measures 35mm across and only 4.5mm in depth.



The dial case design features solid gold quadrant cross sections with a gold, reflective arrow marker at 6 o’clock and a dot at 12 o’ clock.

The needle thin hands extend the look of sleekness throughout the dial. The incredibly thin calibre 2003 movement measures only 1.64mm. thin; developed in 1955, it set the record for being the thinnest movement produced by any watch company.

Audemars Piguet Millenary 4101 timepiece has been awarded the first prize in the « Prix du Public » category at the 2011 edition of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie.

In an evening hosted at the glorious settings of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Audemars Piguet received a distinction on a contemporary piece of its collection and fine example of craftsmanship by extracting the mechanism from the cavity of its case to reveal it in all its splendour from the top of the case. The Millenary 4101 is a masterful creation that not only oozes sophistication and style but also celebrates the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the highly skilled watchmakers in Le Brassus.



Calibre 4101, entirely designed, developed and produced in-house, was built in such a way that the elements normally concealed on the back are now visible from the front. The regulating organ – composed of the balance, lever and escapement – has been reworked in order to meet this goal. It is located at 9 o’clock and offers a truly eye-catching sight. Its variable-inertia balance asserts a powerful presence with its eight inertia-blocks, its golden colour and the distinctive aesthetic of its cross-through bridge. The discerning eye will even detect the lever and the escape-wheel. Merging functionality and design, the timepiece’s inside and outside, form a seamless whole that allow its owner to be able to admire the beating movement from the top.

On collecting the prize on behalf of the brand, Mr. Philippe Merk, CEO of Audemars Piguet said, ‘it is my great honour to receive this prize from the Millenary 4101 on behalf of Audemars Piguet ;’ and continues, `Audemars’ Piguet spirit of independence, excellence and long tradition of meticulous and fine watchmaking are being celebrated. Here’s the new again, old again AP Royal Oak Jumbo.

Jumbo in 1972 terms (maybe) this is a 39mm model – as per the original model from which this version gets both its heritage and its movement. The latter is the venerable AP caliber 2120.

The 2012 variant will also retain the original’s reference number – 15202.

Available in steel or rose gold you’ll get one choice of dial colour: blue grey. You’ll also get a see-through sapphire caseback – again, as per the original.
