Re: Bell & Ross
REVIEW - BELL & ROSS BR02-92 PHANTOM
Bell & Ross the French-Swiss watch brand has been associated with aviation and pilot watches since they started in the early 90's. Currently, their vintage collection - which includes the new WW1 range - reference historic pilot watches, whereas the iconic aviation range of square BR01 and BR03 watches reference the clocks and instruments installed in aircraft cockpits.
However, it’s in the ocean that their range of marine diving watches have been put to the test and Bell & Ross even hold the World Record for water resistance (11,100 metres deep) which was earned by their classic HYDROMAX® watch.
Their present range of diver watches sit in between the BR01 and BR03 aviation range. Called BR02, these watches are often overlooked and seem to get less press attention than the square instruments. However, for many true Bell & Ross fans, the BR02 collection offers an alternative look and given they can withstand up to 1000m deep in water, they’re more than capable of standing their ground against their more popular siblings!
Keen to refresh the collection this year, Bell & Ross released two new variations on it’s BR02 range and it’s one of these models which are focussed here - the BR02-92 Phantom. This watch is available in TIME² at Selfridges, please enquire in store for more details.
Now I know what you’re probably thinking...A diving watch which is 100% black isn’t exactly legible! Despite having huge water resistance, it’s highly unlikely you’d be able to tell the time at say 500 metres deep using this watch. What they’ve done here is taken a very popular concept of a ‘black-out’ watch, first seen on the BR01 and applied it now to the BR02, but with a twist. Rather than simply re-colouring the dial of an existing BR02-92 they’ve redesigned the face and applied glossy indexes. In addition to this, they’ve added larger metal hands and a greyed out bezel marker around the edge, so when you look at the watch and it reflects the sunlight, it’s just breathtaking!
As with the rest of the BR02 range, the chunky 44mm case remains the same. The heat of the watch is a quality Swiss ETA movement and it comes with a rubber strap which is curved and moulded around the case. Want a more luxurious look? Then it’s worth upgrading to a black alligator strap if you’re happy to pay the extra premium.
Okay so it’s probably not going to truly work as a deep diving watch, but if you’re like me and most of the watch owners I know, you don’t go anywhere near that level of depth... However as a rugged masculine watch which screams luxury, it’s hard to beat.
I’ve long been a fan of the BR02 range - these watches really are underrated and would highly recommend anyone interested in buying a Bell & Ross to try one on... even if you don’t plan on getting it wet!

Re: Bell & Ross
Bell & Ross Vintage Collection WW1 Heure Sautante with Power Reserve in Pink Gold & Platinum
BASELWORLD 2012 – Bell & Ross VINTAGE COLLECTION WW1 HEURE SAUTANTE WITH POWER RESERVE in Pink Gold & Platinum
WW1 HEURE SAUTANTE PINK GOLD WITH POWER RESERVE — LIMITED EDITION OF 50 PIECES
WW1 HEURE SAUTANTE PLATINUM WITH POWER RESERVE — LIMITED EDITION OF 25 PIECES
VINTAGE WW1 HEURE SAUTANTE WITH POWER RESERVE
Bell & Ross creates Haute Horlogerie for men for whom time is not only a tool but also a genuine passion. In its quest for the essential, Bell & Ross has created a grand complication with an original display and perfect legibility: the Vintage WW1 Heure Sautante.
THE FINEST EXPERTISE
From its creation, Bell & Ross has always chosen excellence. Bell & Ross watches are developed and assembled at the watchmaking workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The firm, which aims not only to perpetuate the art of Swiss watchmaking but also to satisfy its own quest for perfection, employs the greatest specialists in Haute Horlogerie to develop its specific calibers. To produce the Vintage WW1 Heure Sautante, for instance, Bell & Ross called on the ingenuity of Vincent Calabrese.
A sophisticated COMPLICATION WITH SIMPLIFIED LEGIBILITY
This complication is unusual in that it displays the hours in the form of numerals viewed through a large fixed aperture. The hour hand is replaced by a rotating disc on which the hours are printed. The digits jump instantly when the hour changes. The window, located at 12 o'clock, is perfectly aligned with the single central minute hand and the power reserve indicator at 6 o'clock, arranging the information by order of importance. The power reserve indicator becomes particularly useful since the mechanism triggering the «jump» in the hours requires power. It gives the user an indication of the remaining power, which is vital for the smooth functioning of the movement. This indicator is displayed in an easily legible semi-circular window at 6 o'clock.
A PRECIOUS FINISH AND A MAGNIFIED LEGIBILITY
The cases of the two complications are adorned with two prestigious materials: pink gold and platinum. The ultimate in high-quality materials, they bring their nobility, solidity and sobriety to these timepieces, while remaining loyal to the watch-making firm's design principles. The movement and its immaculate finishes, the blue-steel screws, circular-grained mainplate, oscillating weight and bridges decorated with «Côtes de Genève» are viewed through the sapphire crystal on the caseback.
In its platinum version, the Vintage WW1 Heure Sautante features a second window for the power reserve indicator. Its opaline grey and silvered dial in 18K gold with its hand-applied guilloché decoration and pear-shaped blue-steel hand lend it a timeless elegance.
The pink gold version is enhanced by an opaline pearl dial decorated with finely elegant markers indicated by pear-shaped blue-steel hand. The power reserve indicator is displayed discretely and in perfect harmony with the dial.
Like the VINTAGE WW1 line, the Vintage WW1 Heure Sautante models, with their generous diameter (42mm), horns that replicate original wire handles soldered to the case and their narrow strap, are reminiscent of the first wrist watches. These new models also stand out for the softness of their curved features, making for a perfectly comfortable fit on the wrist.
These two timepieces embody Bell & Ross's expertise in watch-making. Their elegance emphasizes the nobility of their refined lines. They brilliantly combine the complexity of a mechanical movement with the simplicity of a completely new reading system. Bell & Ross therefore perfectly succeeds in its original mission of harnessing technology to promote legibility.
