Breitling: A Brand History!

In 1884, a watchmaker named Léon Breitling sat down in his workshop in the Swiss Jura to make chronographs and precision counters for scientific and industrial purposes. He was ambitious, but little did he know that his handiwork would kickstart a revolution in the world of aviation, and one of the most exclusive luxury brands in the world.

Breitling’s initial endeavours occurred at a time when sports, automobiles and aviation pioneers were crying out for efficient and reliable instruments, and in 1915, they answered the calls with the very first chronograph wristwatch. It took little time for Breitling to become the pilot’s number one choice, causing the watchmaker’s focus move to the field of aviation.

In 1923, Breitling created the first independent chronograph pushpiece - an innovation that completely transformed the calculation of flight times. In 1934, Breitling improved the formula once again, adding a second return-to-zero pushpiece, giving the chronograph the kind of stop/start functionality that remains industry standard to this day.

In the thirties, a fine reputation for precision timing led to a longstanding relationship with the Royal Air Force, who would use Breitling instruments in their triumphant fighter jets during World War II. Three years before the conclusion of the war, the Swiss watch making house changed the face of aviation once more with the Chronomat, the first wristwatch to feature a circular slide rule – a simple-yet-ingenious addition to the bezel that allowed pilots to calculate fuel consumption, air speed, rate of descent, and the conversion of air miles to nautical miles. In 1952, this concept evolved into the Navitimer, a legendary piece that expanded Breitling’s client base to the US armed forces, and the pilots of many major international airlines.

Not content with truly conquering the skies, Breitling then built a watch that was literally out of this planet. By adding a 24-hour dial to their Navitimier in 1962, they created the Cosmonaute Navitimer – a watch that could help its owner distinguish between night and day in space. Astronaut Scott Carpenter wore it during the Aurora 7 mission to great effect. (A limited-edition reissue of this famous piece is pictured above.)

In 1969, Breitling brought about one of the biggest changes in the history of Swiss watchmaking, when they invented the selfwinding chronograph. Far from resting on the laurels of this breakthrough achievement, they continued to research and develop new ways of ensuring reliability and accuracy. This paid off in 1985, when they introduced the Breitling Aerospace a lightweight titanium piece with a groundbreaking electronic chronograph function.

To this day, Breitling remain a family-run business (one of the few Swiss watch houses to remain so) and they are the only major brand to equip all pieces with chronometer-certified movements – the ultimate mark of precision. TIME² is proud to stock the UK’s largest range of Breitling watches, which are split into four core collections: the benchmark-setting Navitimer, the ocean-faring Windrider, the diving-focused Aeromarine and the Red Arrows’ wristwear of choice, the Professional. If you are in the market for a specialist technical watch with an unbeatable pedigree, there are few better choices than a Breitling.

Breitling Emergency Watch
Watches and their celebrity wearers

Image

As a fashion statement, the bulky analogue and digital Breitling Emergency watch doesn’t exactly cut it, but if you’re a professional pilot, as a lifesaving emergency device, don’t fly a plane without it.

This sadly is the mistake wealthy adventurer and good friend of Sir Richard Branson Steve Fossett made when he disappeared over the Nevada desert in 2007. Observers started to speculate on why his Breitling Emergency Mission watch beacon didn’t send out a distress signal which would have enabled rescuers to pinpoint his whereabouts. Fossett was known to possess the multifunction chronograph.

The Breitling Emergency Watch has a built-in micro-transmitter that emits a beacon on the international aviation distress frequency. In case of a crash or other life threatening occurences, the watch wearer can activate the distress beacon, helping rescuers zero in on the crash or problem location. But even the Breitling Emergency watch can’t help you if you don’t wear it.

Celebrity adventurers who love the Breitling Emergency Watch

Buzz Aldrin

As a professional aviation chronometer it’s logical that astronaut Buzz Aldrin should wear one. In the case of Aldrin, it’s no brand ambassador jolly, even in his younger years his Breitling Emergency watch was his timepiece of choice.

Brad Pitt
Image
We can only surmise that Brad Pitt feels the need of one when flying to remote places to adopt more kids with Angelina.

Sir Richard Branson
Image
It’s certainly a watch that has appeal among several celebrity adventurers, perhaps most notable among them being Sir Richard Branson, who has been known to attempt hazardous air balloon trips where it must have come mighty close to activating the distress beacon.

Bear Grylls

Bear Grylls, the youngest British person to conquer Everest and now a TV presenter famous for being dropped into some of the most inhospitable places on earth to show off his survival skills. His latest series is called Worst Case Scenario – and that’s just what the Breitling Emergency Watch is all about.

Steven Seagal

Another celebrity who dons the Breitling Emergency is action star Steven Seagal. Although famous for a string of low budget martial arts action movies, some of which are bad enough to make you want to set off a distress signal, Seagal has served in the Jefferson Police Department in Louisiana for over 20 years. His TV show Steven Seagal: Lawman reveals that his martial arts skills are not just for the cameras. In addition to hand to hand combat, Seagal can shoot a pistol and light a matchstick from 40 feet, repeatedly hit the exact same spot on any given target and chop down rock hard bamboo poles with a samurai sword.

The Breitling Emergency Watch

As for the watch itself, Breitling equipped the Emergency with a miniaturised transmitter operating on the 243.0 MHz military frequency.) Under normal conditions—flat terrain or calm seas—the signal can be picked up at a range of up to 90 nautical miles (167 km) by search aircraft flying at 20,000 feet (6,000 m). In January, 2003, two British pilots, Squadron Leader Steve Brooks and Flight Lieutenant Hugh Quentin-Smith, crashed their helicopter in Antarctica and were rescued after activating their Breitling Emergency transmitter watches.

The two pilots were in their lifeboat when a Chilean Otter aircraft found them after homing in on signals from their watches. The Emergency is available for customers who do not hold a pilot’s licence, but they must sign an agreement stating that they will bear the full costs of a rescue intervention should they trigger the distress beacon.
