PORSCHE DESIGN - P'6500 Heritage
Stuttgart/Grenchen. For watch design, the 1970s were a revolutionary decade. Pro-fessor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche made watches that had no precedent. In 1972 he created the world's first entirely black watch; in 1978 he integrated a compass into a watch; and in 1980 he became the first to use titanium, a light yet stable material, for a chronograph. Porsche Design is now presenting all three horological classics in a single box for the 40th anniversary of the luxury brand. The watches are numbered and lim-ited to 100 pieces. The anniversary box is selling for CHF 16,680, € 14,750, $ 20,850 and is available from July 2012.
Until 1980, titanium was only known as a material used in aviation. This chemical ele-ment, with the atomic number 22, is a so-called transitional metal with a white, silvery sheen. It is light-weight, strong, elastic and resistant to corrosion, and has a high melt-ing point. Because it is lighter than steel and also non-allergenic, titanium is ideally suited for wristwatches and bracelets with graceful links. The re-issued Porsche Design Heritage P'6530 Titanium Chronograph is based on the same success factors as the ori-ginal model: a clear, puristic shape with chronograph pushers incorporated into the case and a case and bracelet made entirely of shot-blasted titanium. The only nod to the contemporary zeitgeist is the diameter, which has grown to 44 millimetres. Besides the time, the dial displays the weekday and date. The subsidiary seconds are located at 9 o'clock. Under the 12 o'clock marker is a 30-minute counter, and the 12-hour counter is found at 6 o'clock. The tachymeter scale is printed on the sapphire crystal. Thanks to the red second hand, the user can measure speeds of 55 to 300 kmh.
The Porsche Design Heritage P'6520 Compass Watch is also made of titanium and gives the time and geographical directions mechanically. Underneath the three-hand watch is a compass, whose needle always indicates the north, thereby defining the four points of the compass. It is available for both the northern and southern hemispheres. The model is the first compass watch ever, and was designed by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1978. The re-issue of this classic watch was adapted for 21-century stand-ards: the diameter was increased slightly. The lower part of the watch holds a liquid compass. In order to take a bearing using this instrument, a scratch-resistant mirror was integrated under the watch and above the compass. It clicks into place at a 45° angle.
The first piece that the luxury brand Porsche Design released after being founded in 1972 was a chronograph all in black. Since it was the world's first black watch ever, it was simply called Chronograph I. The Porsche Design Heritage P'6510 Black Chrono-graph is patterned after the original model of 40 years ago, but some aspects of it were changed to suit the current zeitgeist. The case's diameter grew by 6 millimetres to 44 millimetres, and the black colour is no longer painted on, but rather coated with PVD (physical vapour deposition) to make sure that the black layer is even more durable Ticking inside the watch is an ETA chronograph movement with calendar, the Valjoux 7750. The Porsche Design P'6510 Black Chronograph is water resistant to a depth of 100 metres.
