Can You Rehydrate Cigars? How to Bring Dried-Out Cigars Back to Life

Like foods, spirits, and coffee, cigars are at their best when expertly packaged and enjoyed fresh. However, sometimes we can make a beginner’s mistake and allow our handcrafted masterpieces to dry out. Cigars that are left out of an ideal environment full of requisite moisture can become brittle and bitter. This normally means that the cigar will lose most of its flavor, and the smoking experience will lose its ideal rhythm and smoothness.

The moment of discovery can leave any aficionado in a state of quiet contemplation. As you find a brittle, dried-out treasure, a single, vital question emerges: can you rehumidify cigars? Is a second chance even possible?

Here we will explore precise techniques, discussing how to revive a cigar, how to fix a cigar, and what happens when your cigar dries out, revealing if and how to rehumidify cigars, offering a path from concern to a satisfying solution.

The Harsh Reality of Dried-Out Cigars

Cigars are made from natural ingredients, like tobacco leaves. Because there are only a few ideal growing climates in the world in which to harvest tobacco, it would make sense that these highly temperamental leaves need to be kept at the correct temperature—even after the leaves are picked, dried, fermented, aged, and rolled into your favorite cigar.

The ideal storage environment for a cigar is in an airtight space with 65% to 72% humidity. This meticulous control is the key to preserving the cigar’s integrity. It is an optimal environment that prevents the tobacco leaves from drying out and ensures a vibrant, steady development, allowing each plant to deliver its full, intended character.

Failing to keep cigars in this kind of environment will lead to brittleness and cracking. When that happens, it’s a slippery slope that leads to a decline in taste and draw before the cigar is unusable and unenjoyable altogether.

However, it may be possible to fix your cigars before they reach a state of no return.

Can You Rehydrate Cigars? The Short Answer

The short answer is yes; you can rehydrate cigars. However, you need to be realistic about how much the cigar has undergone. Additionally, there is no guarantee that the cigar returns to its original flavor, or that it doesn’t develop some hiccups in the smoking process that were not previously there.

Assessing the Damage: When Cigars Can Be Saved

If the cigar has avoided mass exposure to water or other liquids and seems structurally intact, there is usually a way to get it back into smoking shape. Search the cigar for cracks and carefully test its structure. Is there any springiness? Is it so brittle that it feels like a stick in your backyard? This is the difference between a cigar worth saving and one that might be worth throwing away.

For extremely dry cigars, but still structurally intact, steps can be taken to restore your dried-out cigars with a gradual rehydration method. However, successful rehydration is an art, not an exact science. It comes with limitations. And, while moisture can be restored, the natural oils that define a cigar's initial character can be lost forever. The resulting smoke, while potentially enjoyable, should be anticipated as a unique and different experience.

How to Rehydrate Cigars: The Slow and Steady Method

The important part of cigar restoration is to remember that there are really no “quick” fixes. In order to get a cigar back to its truest form, you need to have time and patience, understanding that these are natural leaves that need to marinate in an ideal environment.

First, you need to raise the moisture level of the cigar just a little bit at a time by placing the cigar in a humidor. As we mentioned before, the humidity level in the humidor should be set at 62% but no higher than 65% to start.

For this part, consider using a Boveda humidifying pack to aid in the process. If a humidor is not available, that’s okay too. Simply place a Boveda pack with the correct humidity level in an airtight container.

After about a week or so, gradually raise the level of the humidity to 65%-72%. After one week at this optimal humidity level, you can start to test the cigar, and by the second week, with a sound rehabilitation process, the cigar should be ready to enjoy.

How to Revive a Cigar: Advanced Restoration Techniques

A dried-out cigar is a rite of passage for many, but it's not a permanent end. Can you rehydrate a cigar? Yes! But to ensure a flawless restoration, a gradual approach is paramount. Attempting to rush the process can have devastating consequences, leaving you with a compromised wrapper and a muted flavor profile. Our most effective method employs a specialized humidor and precision humidity control packs, for a smooth, deliberate return to peak condition.

The gradual rehydration method involves the use of a humidor or airtight container with controlled humidity packs, like Boveda, to slowly reintroduce moisture. First, isolate the dry cigars and place in a sealed container, such as an airtight plastic container or a humidor bag, separate from your main collection. This allows you to manage the rehydration without affecting cigars that are in good condition.

Introduce a low-humidity pack (e.g., 62% RH) into the container. This prevents shocking the cigars with too much moisture at once, which can cause them to crack. Next, wait and monitor, allowing the cigars to acclimate for two to four weeks. During this time, they will slowly absorb moisture from the pack. Periodically check the cigars for changes in feel.

After the initial period, increase the humidity gradually, replacing the low-humidity pack with a higher one (e.g., 65% RH). Let the cigars rest at this new level for another two to four weeks.

To achieve optimal humidity, repeat the process, moving to a 69% or 72% RH pack to reach your desired storage level. Gently rotate them every few days so that no single cigar is constantly closest to the humidity source, ensuring the cigars rehydrate evenly. The entire process for severely dry cigars can take up to two months.

How to Fix a Dry Cigar Quickly (Emergency Methods)

We've all been there—that "oh no" moment when you realize your cigar is drier than the Sahara. It raises the ultimate question: can you save dried-out cigars? The answer is yes, but it requires patience and a gentle touch. Restoring a dry cigar is possible with "emergency" methods but remember that patience is always the best approach for salvaging premium tobacco.

We’ll dive into the right way of how to rehumidify cigars, learning from both our own missteps and the wisdom of seasoned enthusiasts who know that every cigar is worth the wait.

First is the bag and damp paper towel method, which can provide a quick, temporary fix for a dry cigar. Place the cigar in a clean, resealable plastic bag with a paper towel dampened by distilled water. The paper towel should just be moist, not soaking wet. It should be in the bag but ensure it does not touch the cigar directly to prevent oversaturation and mold growth. Seal the bag and let it sit for a few hours, periodically checking the progress.

Second, there is the Tupperware and sponge method. If you have a container with an airtight seal, this method creates a makeshift humidor for a slightly more controlled environment. Use a clean, unused sponge moistened with distilled water, then place the cigars and the sponge in the container, again making sure they do not touch. Seal the container and check every few hours. Once the cigars feel moist, remove the sponge.

Third is the shower steam method. While it can be very effective, this method requires careful monitoring to prevent overexposure. Place the cigars in an open container in the bathroom, running a hot shower for 10 to 15 minutes to generate steam. Allow the cigars to absorb the moisture naturally, but do not let them get wet. After steaming, move the cigars into a sealed bag to distribute the moisture evenly.

We strongly caution against quick-fix solutions, which often lead to irreversible damage. Hasty rehydration is more likely to fracture the nature of a fine cigar rather than restore the cigar's true essence. As a complex work of art, they are not simply fixable overnight. A cigar must be treated with the patience it deserves; a proper restoration is slow, methodical–a process that honors its delicate construction.

What NOT to Do: Common Rehydration Mistakes

While patience is key to proper restoration, haste is destructive. Forcing a cigar to heat or dry too quickly will essentially bake the tobacco, causing a catastrophic loss of flavor. The resulting smoke is a pale, flavorless imitation of what the cigar once was.

Avoid running the cigar underwater or submerging it in any liquid. Doing so can greatly alter the flavor of the cigar or make it completely unusable. At a certain point, a cigar can become far too waterlogged to enjoy altogether.

Similarly, rapidly trying to heat or dry a cigar will erase nearly all of its flavor.

The temptation to increase the humidity level in your humidor is also great, but remember that fast-forwarding the process and humidifying the cigar too quickly can cause the body of the cigar to swell or to develop mold.

Preventing Future Drying: Learning from Mistakes

A testament to the delicate nature of a fine cigar, the unfortunate reality of a dry humidor is a lesson many enthusiasts learn firsthand. A lapse in maintenance can all too easily lead to the discovery of a brittle, unyielding cigar. The rehydration process, while a rewarding salvage mission, is also an invaluable lesson. This experience provides the foundation for building a better, more vigilant storage regimen. Rather than dwelling on past mistakes, a true connoisseur views it as an opportunity to master the art of long-term preservation. We hope you consider this a gentle nudge into elevating your storage process from a mere habit to an art form.

Armed with newfound knowledge of the rehydration process, you're now equipped to take command of the restoration process. Forget the guesswork; this information empowers you to approach even the driest of treasures with confidence. You can now transform a frustrating discovery into a rewarding act of mastery!

Remember, to preserve the integrity of your cherished cigars, ensure a controlled environment awaits at your destination. This can be achieved with a dedicated airtight humidor or by utilizing Boveda packs within any sealed container to maintain optimal freshness.

No matter your collection size or style, we have a storage solution for you. Discover a range of options, from decorative, table-top masterpieces of oak and glass to convenient on-the-go humidification, including travel sizes for the enthusiast on the go, desktop storage for the discerning collector, and even humidification systems for the serious connoisseur. A guide to dry boxing cigars

Embers-insights Cigar Smoking Guide1-2 Years: Casual Cigar SmokerA guide to dry boxing cigars.A guide to dry boxing cigars

Anyone will tell you that you should store cigars using the 70/70 Rule. That's 70% relative humidity (RH) at a temperature of 70°F. So why do some aficionados deliberately dry out their cigars?

Welcome to dry boxing. As you continue to explore handmade and boutique cigars, it's a technique that provides better flavor and a more even burn. It might even help you to rescue a split stogie.

So, what is dry boxing, and what are the benefits? Read on to find out and take the next step toward becoming a fully-fledged cigar-smoking aficionado.

What is cigar dry boxing?

Cigars need a certain amount of humidity to prevent them from drying out (which can cause them to burn too fast and too hot).

That's why if you're serious about storing your cigars properly, you should invest in a good-quality humidor to manage the relative humidity and, ideally, the temperature.

An RH of 68-72% is a good target. This should keep your cigars in good shape until you're ready to smoke them and it allows the flavor profile to mature. The materials used in your humidor can enrich the flavors in the tobacco, which is why Spanish cedar is so popular.

But there's a school of thought that says you should bring down the humidity of your cigars before you actually smoke them. This makes sense for recent deliveries that were shipped with a humidifier pack, but what about cigars that have been in your humidor for a few weeks?

The benefits of dry boxing

Dry boxing cigars for 2-3 days can bring the humidity down to around 60%. And that's a good thing.

Excess humidity in the center of the stick can bring bitterness into the flavor profile, as well as affect the evenness of the burn.

You can think of dry boxing as letting your cigars breathe. They get some time to relax, allowing them to adjust from perfect storage conditions to perfect smoking conditions.

If you’re certain a cigar is too moist, dry boxing is the obvious remedy. It's easy to do, it doesn't need any special equipment (a plain wooden box is just fine), and it gives reliable results.

What can dry boxing do?

You want to enjoy your expertly blended cigars at their best. And a few days in a box can augment or even fix a premium cigar.

Besides removing excess moisture from the filler, bringing the RH down those extra few percent from 70 to 60 separates the leaves and creates little tunnels and passageways for the smoke to sneak through.

This can totally transform the draw, making the cigar easier to smoke and ensuring you get to savor the flavor profile equally in the first, middle and final thirds.

If you've already started smoking an overly moist stogie, there's a risk that the swollen stick will start to split. This isn't a disaster. Dry box it for a couple of days and try again. The results can be incredible on a premium cigar that's been shipped or stored in too high humidity.

Common cigar burn issues and how to fix them

A burning question for many cigar beginners is identifying common cigar burn issues, what causes them, and then ...

How to properly dry box cigars
Now we know the benefits of dry boxing cigars, it's time to learn the technique. Don’t worry, it's one of the easiest methods ever.

First, you'll need a box, such as an empty wooden cigar box from a recent order. Place the cigars you wish to dry box in the container, close it up and leave it alone for 48 hours. The ideal conditions for this are away from direct sunlight, temperature extremes, and moving air currents (e.g., fans or air conditioning), all of which can dry the tobacco too fast.

Adjusting the humidity naturally and gradually allows the leaves to shift and separate inside the stick, without it becoming too dry or cracking.

On the third day, your cigars should be about ready to smoke. If you want to make absolutely sure, move them over to a humidor and use that to bring them even closer to your preferred humidity.

Common dry boxing mistakes

Dry boxing is very easy, but there are a few places where you can go wrong. Some of the most common dry boxing mistakes include:

Leaving cellophane on

On premium cigars, cellophane is for shipping, not for storage. Wrapping the stick in plastic can make it more difficult to get moisture in and out, and increases the time taken for the flavors to mature in your humidor. Take it off, and you can dry box the cigar in the usual 2-3 days.

Dry boxing in a humidor

You can use a wooden humidor for dry boxing, but that's not really what they're made for. Get a good humidor for long-term storage, but use an empty cigar box for dry boxing. That way, you can have a few sticks in different boxes to keep a daily supply of just-right smokes.

Adjusting humidity too quickly

This applies to dry boxing AND humidifying your cigars. You should never just blast a stick with a rapid change in RH, whether it's a cheap stogie or a premium hand-rolled boutique cigar. It can cause swelling or cracking and ruin the burn.

Take it easy and go gentle on your cigars during dry boxing. You'll get the best out of their burn and flavor profile every time.
