New Voutilainen Vingt-8 "ISO"
The watchmaker has just unveiled a new and original complication in his Vingt-8 model.


You can see on the picture below that there is a mobile minute ring. The ring will move at the same speed than the hour hand. Hence, the minute hand will have to adapt its pace to show the right time.

Here is what Kari Voutilainen says:

"The watch bears an original display of hours and minutes. At the top of each hour, the minute hand overlaps the hour hand, regardless of the time. On every half hour, the minute and hours hands are opposite. The circle of minutes turns at the same rate as the hour hand for easy reading. The angle between the hour hand and the minute hand remains the same regardless of the time. The position of the hour and minute hands, with respect to the other is always the same according to the minutes, whatever the hour is."

A very clever other way of displaying time. And what is surprising is that it still looks very legible that way.

Introducing The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin And Royal Oak Chronograph, In Mixed Titanium And Platinum

Watchmakers regularly introduce existing watches in new colors and new metals. Sometimes this feels like incremental news, and sometimes it feels like you're getting a whole new watch. These two releases definitely fall into the latter camp. A day before SIHH 2017 officially starts, Audemars Piguet has unveiled both the Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin and the Royal Oak Chronograph in combination titanium and platinum iterations. Yeah, we're excited too.

When the Royal Oak was first unveiled in 1972, it was its steel construction and the high degree of finishing on the steel case and bracelet that really set it apart from everything that had come before. Now, we've seen Royal Oaks in basically every combination of metals imaginable, but this here is something new and special. The main cases and bracelet links of both these watches are titanium, with the bezels and the smaller middle links of the bracelets rendered in highly polished platinum. Titanium makes a lot of sense for the Royal Oak, when you think about it – true to the non-precious metal origins of the watch, lightweight, and both fun and easy to wear.

This is the big boy. This is the 41mm Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin that you know and love, but in brushed titanium with the polished platinum accents. In addition, the main gear train of the caliber 2924 movement has been colored grey, though we're yet to get an actual look at the movement itself.

Last year we got this same reference in solid platinum, but there's no question that a full platinum Royal Oak is a serious wrist-weight. It's hard to call something with a tourbillon visible on the dial a "sleeper watch," but this might be just that. From a distance, it would be hard for anyone to realize just how awesome this thing really is.

This is a limited edition of just 50 pieces, it is priced at $160,200, and it's an Audemars Piguet boutique exclusive.

Then there's this special edition. This watch is identical to the new Royal Oak Chronographs we told you about earlier – with the larger sub-registers, adjusted date window, and wider markers – but with this special titanium/platinum case construction. The dial is a rich grey with dark blue sub-registers, a popular color combination with platinum watches. Having the top of the bezel polished here really makes the dial pop when compared to the brushed finish usually applied to the steel bezels.

This watch is priced at $40,900, and while it is is not a limited edition, it is still exclusive to Audemars Piguet boutiques.

There's also a ladies Royal Oak in this metal combination, with diamond on the bezel and a quartz movement inside. Sure, it's not as interesting to us as the two watches above, but you still get this awesome new titanium/platinum combo.

Pricing is yet to be announced on these three watches, but we'll update this story as soon as that information becomes available.

Introducing The New Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph, An Update On A Modern Classic

We sensed something special would be coming from Le Brassus this year, but we were a little unsure about the exact model, since there are a number of Royal Oak–related anniversaries this year. What we have here is a new Royal Oak Chronograph marking the 20th anniversary of that model, with a seriously updated look. No, these don't contain a new in-house chronograph movement, but they're worth taking a closer look at nonetheless.

In total, Audemars Piguet is offering seven different executions of the new series – three in stainless steel and four in pink gold. We’ll get to the details in a bit, but first, here’s a look at how this new range differs from the previous one. Hint: most (but not all) of the changes are cosmetic, resulting in a very different kind of chronograph.

While most models come on integrated metal bracelets, these two versions have alligator straps.

The new series replaces the the line-up that's been on offer since 2012, and it's all about swapping monotone for two-tone. That’s right, uniform colored dials have been completely shunned from the new collection, and that’s a pretty radical move when you consider there are only two like it in the Chronograph collection, both of them in limited editions of a few hundred pieces. They were the silver and blue "Swiss Made Limited Edition" and the black and silver "QE II Cup 2015 Limited Edition." There were of course others in the Offshore collection.

Both of those color schemes are back (see above), though in both cases they have been inverted. Additionally, five more two-tone dials are being offered – including a reverse panda configuration – in stainless steel, titanium and pink gold cases.

Of course, if you want to go all-out, you can get one of the solid gold versions on a matching rose gold bracelet.

Other changes made on the dial show a concerted effort to increase legibility. The size of the chronograph counters at nine o'clock and three o'clock have increased, and so has the width of the hour markers, meaning there’s also more luminescent material filling each one.

I suspect the most controversial decision though won’t be the two-tone dials, but rather the very slight adjustment in the position of the date window, which stays between four and five o’clock, but drifts from a perfectly centered position between the two hours makers because of the size of the 30-minute counter.

Up close, you can really get a sense of the new dial proportions.

Inside these new chronographs is the automatic caliber 2385, which AP has not updated for this model. It's still the same self-winding chronograph movement with a vertical clutch and a 40-hour power reserve. Sure, adding an in-house movement here would have been awesome, but this is no slouch of a caliber by any measure. Far from it, in fact.

As far as pricing goes, there are basically three pricing levels. The stainless steel watches with integrated bracelets are priced at $24,300. For the gold watches, those with straps will set you back $38,300, while those on integrated bracelets will cost $56,600.
