Which watch to wear in a rock and roll band

Rock and roll. It’s 78 cities in 90 days. Never the same room twice. It’s Breakfast TV appearances looking pale and fragile from the heady excesses of just a few short hours earlier.

The middle aged interviewer in his crisp shirt, shiny tie and sensible haircut clearly has no idea what you’re all about. And your voice is still hoarse from belting out tracks from your new best-selling album. Even as you grin to camera behind your shades, thousands of fans are making illegal downloads of your new release on Pirate Bay.

Suddenly the interviewer, desperate for something to remark upon, notices your watch, which hogs a large portion of your lower arm. You hold it up to the camera and mumble something about a Ladoire Black Widow.

Designed and developed by Lionel Ladoire, himself a drummer in a rock band, the Ladoire Black Widow is the ultimate rock and roll watch. The Black Widow Mr. Race with its eye-catching red accents features Ladoire’s Calvet/02 Calibre equipped with a micro-rotor. The watch comes with the patented HMS Planetary time display complication with three rotating disks positioned on hi-tech ceramic ball bearings. And because you’re constantly switching time zones it also features a quickset GMT hand that automatically advances with the push of a button on the right side of the case. But above all, it’s big, striking and extremely rock and roll.

There’s band tension between you and the lead guitarist, who also reckons he knows what’s hot in haute horology. As he shoves forth his quadruple tourbillion Greubel Forsey, one has to admit, he might have a point.

Known as Invention Piece 2 by the boys at Greubel Forsey, this watch is also extremely aristocratic rock and roll. The two double tourbillon systems are presented head to tail and coupled by a spherical differential. A sub-dial at 5 o’clock conceals triple mainspring barrels and features a red triangle indicating hours and a rotating disk indicates minutes. Small seconds dial at 10 o’clock and 56-hour power reserve indicator at 11 o’clock complete the dial. Most importantly of all, there are only 11 of them made, so this was as a special favour from Stephen Forsey – and here it is causing massive glare on camera 2.

The interviewer, sensing a theme that might chew up another two minutes which may serve to conceal his pig ignorance of the band, asks the drummer what he’s wearing. Like most drummers, this one is pretty sullen and uncommunicative and not that into watches. And besides, you need a helluva watch to compete with all the frantic arm movements an average night’s drumskin slapping entails.

Suunto Terra Elementum All Black

He can’t remember where he picked it up, but the drummer is wearing this rather stunning Suunto. Considering the drummer is rarely seen in anything other than entirely black, the watch is very fitting. The Terra provides essential information that makes for both urban and outdoor exploration with the utmost confidence. The design of the Elementum Terra is based on physical robustness with intelligent navigation ensuring it will perform solidly, regardless of conditions, even football stadiums converted for the night into candle holding shrines to your band’s musicianship. But the drummer likes it just because it’s chunky and black.

Turning to the bass player the camera focuses on his meaty Casio G-Shock Riseman.

The inert bass player, nursing a Bell’s whisky afterburn of a headache, doesn’t really want to play this game, so he reluctantly points to his Casio G-Shock. Mind you it’s not any old G-Shock, it’s a brand new limited edition Riseman with the new purple dial upgrade. Like many a G-Shock it’s got so many additional features such as countdown timers, barometer reading, world time in 29 time zones, that good old fashioned digital time telling is almost something of an after thought. Not that its owner has to worry about timekeeping. Management drudges organise where he needs to be from dusk to dawn.

Finally, with time almost up, there is just 30 seconds to focus on the keyboard player’s choice of horology. He surprises everyone by revealing a Limited Edition Omega.

It’s amazing how many musos are also into space and astronomy. The keyboard player has only bagged himself a platinum version of the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” watch – limited of course to just to 69 pieces, the year of the first lunar landing.

The casebody and screw and pin bracelet are made of platinum and the medallion on the small seconds counter is made of 18 Ct yellow gold as is the small seconds hand. The hour and minute hands as well as the 30 minute and 12 hour counter hands are made of platinum.

Just as the keyboardist is about to launch into an in-depth explanation of the dial design, the producer is bleating into the ear of the interviewer that time is up.

The lead guitarist shoves his foot to camera and asks if they’d like to know what type of Converse sneakers he’s wearing.

“I’m sorry but we’re out of time” the interviewer declares with not a little relief.

“Out of time?” says the guitarist with heavy sarcasm, “that’s f**king hilarious…did you think of that?”

And they had so nearly got away without an expletive on breakfast television.
