From pre-historic times to the 15th Century

Introduction

The notion of time has entranced man over countless millennia, deeply studied and written about over many centuries. As such, very little, if anything, can be claimed as original in this treatise.

Nevertheless, the topic was selected since the subject remains as fascinating today as it has been throughout the ages.

Moreover, the emergence of electronic commerce and the gradual disappearance of national boundaries have converged to create a very urgent need for a more precise definition of time and the synchronisation of the whole world.

The essay’s originality, such as it is, lies simply in the attempt to present the evidence in a way that has not been done before in order to ask some searching questions, or offer a fresh outlook to anyone interested in the subject.

I hope this short journey through “ways of telling the time” will make thought provoking reading, or provide a platform for further research in a subject that has dominated man since the beginning of time.

Horology fan on track with Olympic gifts; Time to move on: Michael, 72, starts watch making studies.

A former international businessman has gone back to college at the age of 72 to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a watch maker.

Michael Vardanis moved to Birmingham from his home in America specifically to study at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design's School of Jewellery.

After becoming fascinated with his father's pocket watch as a nine-year-old

in his native Greece, Mr Vardanis travelled the world before settling in Hockley to study at the only college in Europe that did not have an age limit on its horology horology (hōrŏl`əjē), science of measuring time and technology of constructing instruments for its measurement or recording. students.

Now the retired printing press engineer and salesman is designing a series of timepieces - all incorporate a running stadium design as their face - to commemorate the Olympics in the city of his birth, Athens, in 2004.

'At my age, I am not interested in qualifications, but I was determined to find the answers to many horological questions that have haunted me all my life,' he said.

'The main reason I came to Birmingham was because the School of Jewellery is simply the best in the world ... twinned with the fact that they would let me in at my age I didn't give it a second thought to move to Birmingham.'

Jim Kynes , director of the HND HND (in Britain) Higher National Diploma; a qualification in a technical subject equivalent to an ordinary degree

Noun 1. HND - a diploma given for vocational training that prepares the student for a career in a particular area; good in horology course, said Mr Vardanis was living proof that you were never to old to go to college.

'Michael is a truly remarkable character and his work is extremely detailed and accurate in every way,' he said.

'There is a world wide shortage of watch makers and we cannot believe that any horology college would want to turn away anyone with Michael's talent, enthusiasm and ability.'
