James Bond's Rolex 5513 For Sale, Complete With Hyper Intensified Magnetic Field Generator & Buzz Saw Bezel

Image

You want a James Bond Rolex? Well, it doesn't get more James Bond than this. In the seminal Bond flick Live and Let Die, Roger Moore is donning a Rolex Reference 5513 Submariner that has been modified by Q to include both a buzz-saw bezel, which Bond uses to free himself and Solitaire (Jane Seymour) before they could be fed to hungry sharks (without laser beams attached to their heads, though) and a "hyper intensified magnetic field" generator. This magnetic field was strong enough to stop a bullet, which it did in Bond's final showdown in the movie, as well as helped Bond unzip Madeline Smith's dress without laying a finger on her. It was, after all, "Sheer magnetism, darling."

We found the watch, and it's for sale.

This Rolex, which is the one worn by Moore in the movie has been completely modified and actually had the movement removed during pre-production to build in these Bondish features. The buzz saw bezel is still in place on this watch, the caseback is signed "Roger Moore 007", and there is a small pinhole where there was once a thin wire installed to help unzip Miss Smith's dress during filming. The watch itself was produced by Rolex in 1972 and still has its original bracelet, as well.

Included in the sale will be gadget designer and cool guy Syd Cain's original concept drawings for the watch, as well as two framed images of Moore wearing the watch as James Bond in the film. The pre-sale estimate for this watch is $230,000 to $450,000, which considering the indisputable provenance and all around awesomeness of this find, shouldn't be too hard to hit.

James Bond's Rolex Reference 5513 with Buzz Saw Bezel and Hyper Intensified Magnetic Field Generator from Live And Let Die will be sold by Christies Geneva in the November 2011 sale.

SPOTTED: A Rolex Pre-Daytona Ref 6238 With A Black Dial (And Why That Matters)

Image

You are looking at a really cool watch. In fact, this might be the first time we've spotted one in the wild. Adorning the wrist of a fine young gentleman with whom we had breakfast yesterday, you are looking at a 1960s Rolex chronograph reference 6238. The 6238 is known as the "pre-Daytona" reference as it is the immediate precursor to the original Daytona, the 6239. Most 6238s you find on the open market feature one of two shades of silver dial (for example the watch worn by James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service).

These watches with silver dials (of the non-007 variety, of course) trade in the 20s and 30s for average, nice examples. But, in one of the most dramatic disparities of any Rolex sport model, 6238s with black dials trade for two to three, to sometimes four times the value of a silver dial. Why? There just aren't that many of them.

For example, Antiquorum Geneva has two 6238s in the catalog, one in silver here with an estimate of $20,000-$30,000. Meanwhile, the very lot before is essentially the same watch, just with a black dial, and you see an estimate of $65,000 - $90,000. Crazy right? Crazy but true and one of the many intricacies that define vintage Rolex collecting.

Even cooler still - How about a 6238 in yellow gold with a black dial?
