Your Vintage Audemars Piguet Buying Guide: Some Watches To Consider From AP That Are Not Royal Oaks
Great vintage watches from Audemars Piguet do not come up for sale often. They are rarer than vintage Vacherons or Pateks, especially in modern sizes and aesthetics. There are a few vintage AP's that do well at auction - obviously the early Royal Oaks (we'll get to chose later today) - but also the traditional chronographs like this that pulled down $386,000 and this triple-date moonphase chrono that made almost $90,000. Next month, there is a great chance to buy some really special watches from Audemars Piguet that date to the brand's formative years, and are unlike the watches offered from them today.
Below, we take a look at five vintage AP's coming up for sale in May from Antiquorum and Christie's, and there is not a single hexagonal screw in sight.
The first watch you see above an incredibly rare full calendar tank wristwatch from Audemars Piguet that dates all the way back to 1930. It was retailed (and signed) by Gubelin, and what is so remarkable about this 82 year old watch is that it is in completely original condition, retaining all original hands, numerals, hallmlarks, and even the crown! More details can be found here.
Then, we have just a brilliant AP chronograph that dates all the way back to 1941. The dial is absolutely perfect with a blue tachy scale, the case is made not of yellow but of pink gold, and the size is very wearable at 36mm. Estimate here is 40-60k CHF, and it will be sold at Christie's Geneva. More details here.
Next, coming to us from Antiquorum's May Geneva sale, is a super nice, super affordable vintage AP tank. The case is made of pink gold again (more desirable than yellow) and this is just a super nice watch for the money, and completely unlike anything you'll see from AP today. The pre-sale estimate is only 2500CHF - 4500CHF and more details can be found here.
Next we have really an exceptionally watch that says Cartier on the dial, but the movement came from Audemars Piguet. This watch dates to 1971 and was cased in New York, and is part of Cartier's large oval series. Here you get quintessential Cartier styling with an Audemars Piguet movement, from the 1970s. Very . Details here.
To round out the collection of non-Royal Oak APs that will be available in May, we have what is actually the very first automatic tourbillon wristwatch, and the first titanium tourbillon ever made. This is really a cult watch, and an important piece of horological history. It will be available at Antiquorum in Geneva with a pre-sale estimate of $15-$20k. More details here.
Stay tuned shortly for a look at a few other AP's (that happen to be Royal Oaks) available in these same auction that are really exceptional, coming soon on HODINKEE!
