Basel World 2012: Introducing The Tissot Heritage PR 516

Image

This is a great looking new introduction for BaselWorld 2012 from Tissot. The Heritage PR516 is a throwback to the PR 516 from the 1960s and 70s, one of Tissot's most favored vintage pieces. To be specific, the Heritage PR516 is actually an homage to the Tissot Seastar PR 516 GL - and this new piece retains the same dial markings as the original.

Sized at 40mm with a sapphire caseback (notice the rotor?) the Heritage PR516 will be available in steel or PVD gold and on either a leather racing strap or a steel big-hole bracelet as seen in the picture.

We don't have word on pricing yet, but it will be between $500 and $1000.

A Tissot Alternative to the Jazzmaster

Εικόνα

Sure, it may not be as thin as some of the offerings from Hamilton, but this Tissot is a sharp-looking piece, isn’t it?

This is part of their Classic line; the specific reference is T049.407.16.057.00. If you were to search one of these out, you’d get the following:

Automatic mechanical movement (2824-2)
Stainless steel case (38mm by 10mm thick)
Leather strap
Hours / minutes / seconds / date
100m water resistance
So, why might you opt for a watch like this? Obviously, it’s a very classic presentation of a dress watch, though the Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 are a bit of a deviation from the “standard”. Of course, you could argue that the date is as well.

Regardless, it’s a simply stated watch. It’s not pretending to be something it’s not – in other words, it knows it’s a dressier watch that will likely see time in an office, and it’s built to handle that. Additionally, that 100m water resistance rating should stand up to daily wear as well.

The inclusion of the 2824-2 movement makes this watch much more of a known quantity to those who have been around the watch scene, and means that any purchaser knows what they’re getting into, and your local watchmaker shouldn’t have any issues servicing it.

I think a watch like this is best for someone who is just starting out their collection, and maybe doesn’t have an automatic dress watch yet. Mostly because the style lends itself to a variety of situations, and the price (around $350 on Amazon) lends itself nicely to that beginner.
