I am a Marketing Director for a Breitling AD in the States, so I get to look at new stock when it comes in. Well, the new Breitling Premier came in and I got my grubby hands on them. Here are my thoughts. If you don’t want them, feel free to tune them out and just pay attention to the factual bits.

So, there were some comparisons between the Premier & an Omega Deville Chrono, so I measured the thickness of the Premier and some of the watches that I think it is visually similar to.

I will say that Mr. Kern & his design team knocked it out of the park with the Premier. It’s really something special. Looking at all of the watches that we carry in the store that I work at (FYI we’re an AD of eight brands including all of the ones referenced here) I pulled together some of the watches that I thought were good comparison watches for the Premier. Here are their measurements:

Breitling Premier B01: 42 mm - 13.65 mm – 22 mm Between Lugs - 70 hr Reserve
Breitling Premier Chronograph: 42 mm - 13.8 mm Thick - 22 mm Between Lugs – 48 hr Reserve
Omega Deville Chronograph: 42 mm - 15.9 mm Thick - 21 mm Between Lugs - 60 hr Reserve
Omega Aqua Terra 41.5 mm: - 12.8 mm Thick – 20 mm Between Lugs –60 hr Reserve
Omega Aqua Terra GMT Chronograph: 43 mm – 17 mm Thick - 60 hr Reserve
IWC Portugieser Chrono: 41 mm - 12.3 mm Thick – 20 mm Between Lugs – 44 Hr Reserve
Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Chronograph: 42 mm - 11.9 mm Thick– 65 Hr Reserve

As you can see, the Premier slots right in the middle in terms of case thickness. The Deville Chronograph, that another post alluded to, is much thicker – almost a good 14% larger. The reason the poster may have thought the Omega was thinner was probably because of the non-chrono version, because that version is less than 12mm thick.
If you’re a Power Reserve guy, the Premier B01 is where it’s at. With these watches, it has the longest power reserve of these seven watches & four brands. The B01 is an excellent movement that is amongst the world’s best and it shows its might here. Whether you have one watch or a collection, this is a great attribute that can’t be denied. That said, the Premier Chronograph has the second shortest power reserve in this selection of fine watches.
As for case size, it’s right where you would expect a dressy chronograph to be at 42 mm. Very good looking, not too big & garish. But also, shows its Breitling DNA with the polished Navitimer bracelet. Great looking, sure to attract new buyers, but also, enough in there for us Breitling nerds.

Now, Breitling under Kern’s tenure has been compared to IWC many times – especially for the Navitimer 8. This watch is somewhat reminiscent of the Portugieser line. But, upon closer inspection, they are extremely different. The IWC has only one color per dial; the Breitlings have panda dials. The pushers are also completely different as well as the IWC features a piston shape to the Breitling’s more tapered design. Also, most tellingly, the subdials are at 12 & 6 on the IWC compared to 9 & 3 on the Premier.

I think the best comparison, at least, amongst the 1,100-odd watches that we carry in the store that I call home, is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris. The Polaris has the subdials in the same spots and a similar tapered pusher design. BUT, it does not have a date wheel like the Breitling, and again, is monotone. Between the two, yes, JLC is one of the Big Three in watches, but to be honest, speaking for myself, I think the Premier’s design is the superior one. The pushers are sleeker than the JLC, plus it’s damn near $1,000 cheaper than the Polaris on a leather strap & a full $2,000 less expensive than the JLC on a bracelet – and that has to account for something.
Another good comparison is the Omega Aqua Terra GMT Chronograph. It has a similar tapered pusher design and even a GMT function. But it also has a $9,250 price tag - $550 more than the Breitling. This Omega is where Breitling may have a real competitor because the Omega has an additional function and only a 10 hour deficit on power reserve. That said, if you have several watches, as I do, and let them run down, setting the Omega AT GMT is a bit of a pain, because it doesn’t have a quick-set date – much like a Rolex GMT Master II. Meanwhile, the Breitling, with its GMT-less 01 movement, has a quick-set date.
For me, I use the date a heck of a lot more than the GMT function.
Looking at all of these watches, I gotta be honest with you, for about the first time in my watch-buying life, my next Breitling won’t be a Navitimer, instead, it’s going to be a Premier. This is classic that we can buy brand new. The Navitimer bracelet is the only Jubilee bracelet I have ever liked (yes, including Rolex’s) and it’s got it; I love display backs & it’s got one; heck it’s got an in-house movement, too. Plus the color combos are great looking, too with black-eyed blue & panda variants, these watches are stunning pieces that are just dressy enough & just sport enough all at the same time.
