Five Reasons You Should Own A Bulgari Watch

Before opening its Swiss watch subsidiary in 1980, Bulgari (or ‘Bvlgari’ as their logo reads in the Latin alphabet) was already a world leader in luxury goods. With its unique designs and impressive in-house calibres and parts, Bulgari has come to the forefront in the luxury watch market, living up to a legacy that began in Greece in the nineteenth century.

If you were thinking of going shopping for a Bulgari piece, here’s five compelling reasons to head to TIME² today...
BULGARI KNOW HOW TO DO LUXURY

If you have ever browsed the high-end boutiques of London, Paris, Beverly Hills or Milan, you will be aware of Bulgari’s excellent standing as a luxury good purveyor. Its ranges include jewellery, fragrances, skincare products, leather handbags, sunglasses, ties and cufflinks. You can even enjoy a luxury break at Bulgari Resorts in Milan and Bali, with a London hotel due to open next year. With such wide-ranging experience in the field of luxury lifestyle, it’s little surprise that they offer sublime wristwear.
BULGARI EXPERTLY COMBINEs FASHION JEWELLERY AND TIMEPIECES

Bulgari has combined its experience in the luxury jewellery market with watchmaking to make some truly unique pieces. One of its most iconic and distinctive collections is the Serpenti – designed to wrap around the wrist like a snake. Originally introduced as a timepiece in the late 1980's, this bracelet watch calls upon the snake as a symbol of eternal youth and immortality.
BULGARI DOESN'T LET FORM OVERSHADOW FUNCTION

Just because it caters for the fashionistas doesn’t mean Bulgari can’t please discerning watch lovers too. The Assioma chrono, for example, features a Bulgari automatic winding movement, a 44mm stainless steel case and an in-house stainless steel bracelet. The functional Diagono X-Pro chrono features an officially certified chronometer housed within a robust 44mm titanium and black steel case, topped off with a sporty black rubber strap.

Yet Bulgari saves its very highest quality for the Masterpieces Collection: the striking Octo Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon features an in-house movement, four ‘gongs’ capable of playing the Westminster chime, and a stunning milled and cloisonné dial.
BULGARI IS BIG IN HOLLYWOOD

Film buffs will notice that Bulgari pieces often crop up in the movies. In Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr’s character teams his tuxedo with a Bvlgari Diagono, John Voight wears one in Mission Impossible and Val Kilmer keeps time with a Bulgari in The Saint. Interestingly, Tom Cruise appears to wear a futuristic Bulgari in Minority Report, but in fact, it’s an Omega X-33 with a Bulgari logo on it. Omega spotted this, and won their subsequent lawsuit with Bulgari!
BULGARI IS ETHICALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND

If a Bulgari watch makes it from its Swiss headquarters to your wrist, you can be assured it has done so with minimal environmental impact and no ethical complications. Bulgari is proud to stress that none of its jewellery or watches use conflict diamonds, and its business model is centred on responsible use of natural resources and an environmentally sound approach to production. It is also committed to several charitable associations, including Save The Children and World Scouting.

BULGARI - Interview of Francesco Trapani, CEO

A truly leading figure on the world watchmakingscene, the CEO of Bulgari SpA, Francesco Trapani has been on the Board of LVMH since the end of March, and is destined to enter the ExecutiveCommittee some time during the second half of the year, to take control of all the Group’s‘Watchmaking- Jewellery’activities. We met up with him in Rome, at his office in Lungotevere Marzio.

Paolo Gobbi: 2011 is an important year that will certainly go down in the history of Bulgari.
Francesco Trapani: After 127 years under the Bulgari family, the company has signed this important deal withLVMH,exchanging our majority shareholding in Bulgarifor a minority holding in LVMH, at extremely favourable financial conditions for us.Then, not many people know that we also invested an additional170 million Euro the day after the deal wasannounced to meet an agreement with LVMHthat required our share to arrive at certain level of the total capital. In general I think that it’s been a highly successful operation, one that every one should be pleased with, both our employees and our partners. From now on, Bulgari will be an integral part of a very large, powerful Group and so we can realistically expect the brand to be stronger and even more influential in the future.

Which model from the present collection best represents the Bulgari trademark?
You can’t evaluate a sector like ours without makinga precise distinction between men’s and ladies’models, because in effect they are completely different. Looking at the ladies’ line, the star of the collection is certainly the Serpenti line, in particular the two types, Tubogas and the one with “scales< as we call them here in-house. They’ve been far more successful and longer lasting than we first predicted. For men on the other hand, given that the Bulgari-Bulgari has always been our great blockbuster, I’d say that the two collections Bulgari-Genta and Bulgari-Roth are giving some excellent results. More generally, our watchmaking sector as a whole is doing extremely well.

So, your customers are happy with the total merger between Roth, Genta and Bulgari?
After a whole year of explanations to all the media, and contacts and events dedicated to collectors, let’s say the overall result has been most satisfactory. Sales apart, market appreciation for the product is evident. In the end all we’ve done is to combine the expertise of Bulgari design with that of the high
range watchmaking typical of our centre of excellence in Roth and Genta. We’re taking a course that’s already clear in other sectors: in the automotive sector, for example, AMG has become the centre of
excellence that deals with all the top range Mercedes sports models. In exactly the same way, we’ll have our own centre of excellence in Le Sentier.

The best response to those with any doubts about this merger certainly came with the Endurer Chronosprint All Blacks, a model that in Basle has cast
away any shadow of doubt from both sector operators and enthusiasts.
Yes, that was a special series of the Endurer in collaboration with the All Blacks, an absolutely original initiative. Not that sport wasn’t already part, often integral, of the world of watches, like in sailing, or Formula 1... We simply chose rugby because up until then it had been pretty much left out.

How did the idea for the All Blacks come about?
It all started absolutely by chance. Talking with a group of people from the New Zealand rugby union we immediately discovered some affinities with the All Blacks: the first and most obvious being a number of dates. We share the same year of foundation, 1884, while in 1905 when they were on their first tour of Europe, we opened our shop in Via Condotti… So we decided to do something together. The result is the limited edition watch we’ve already made, and that is enjoying, once again may I add, a success far beyond our expectations: already sold-out and with a long waiting list.

What are your long term goals?
We will keep on serving the two segments, men’s and ladies’, in a totally differentiated manner. For the latter, we’ll keep on with the Serpenti line, making the Bulgari-Bulgari even more feminine, while siding it with a few models obviously derived from our jewellery, like the Astral. For men, we’ll be working on models that combine the sophistication of the mechanical part with a strong, immediately recognisable design. We want to be distinctive, both for technology and design.

Is watchmaking an “ethical” sector?
That depends on the operators. Like everywhere else, not just in watchmaking, the real discriminating factor is the individual operator.

Is Bulgari an ethical brand?
We are very much aware of ethics in general. We know we have a responsibility not only toward ouremployees, but also toward the group we belong to. So the way we behave can’t be limited simply to compliance with the law, we have to do better, and go beyond.

And Save the Children is an example of this?
Yes, and a very important one. We’ve been working with Save the Children for three years now:we’ve made our world-wide organisation and distribution system available to them for collecting donations for activities and initiatives dedicated to children, their survival and education. It’s a significant project because it’s world-wide, long term and because it’s already collected a remarkableamount of money.

Bulgari - LVMH
It’s fairly recent news that the Bulgari family, the majority shareholders in the famousItalian watchmaking company founded by Sotirio Bulgari in 1884, has decided to ally with the LVMH Group with the aim of strengthening the long-term development prospects of the Bulgari Group, in full respectof its history, its values, its crafting skill and its identity. To achieve this aim the familyhas conceded its majority shareholding inBulgari SpA, while at the same time becoming the second largest family shareholder in the LVMH Group.

Bulgari Grande Sonnerie Perpetual Calendar

Impeccable…

A Grand Complication model housing a wealth of superlatives, the new Bulgari Grande Sonnerie Perpetual Calendar, Daniel Roth Collection, boasts a 923-part movement that sounds the Westminster chime while also providing full calendar indications. The creation of this timepiece requires the steady hand of a master-watchmaker for a full year; 20 different functions are resident within its mechanical architecture. Bulgari claims this watch to be in the 10 most complicated watches ever presented, though I have not verified this claim (lazy Thursday). It is undoubtedly a majestic looking watch, with the sounds of the Westminster chime making it a desirable object for the serious watch connoisseur.
